SCX24 Motor Upgrade Guide 2024 [Step By Step]

Do you know you can easily upgrade your RC car motor without any expert help? Yes, you heard it right my friend! RC motor upgrade is an easy process. We’ll guide you.

So, you want to perform an SCX24 motor upgrade?

There are three motors to choose from for the SCX24 motor upgrade. The first one is Dynamite 88T aka DYNS 127, the second one is Hot Racing 66T. It’s a high-torque motor suitable for rock climbing. Also, there’s an allrounder, Furirek 2204 1400KV brushless motor for long-lasting high performance.

Yeah, we know you’re quite curious to know the details about these motors. So, without any delay let’s hop into the discussion. It’s gonna be a wild ride.

Motor Upgrade for SCX24 – Quick Overview

There are different types of motors available to upgrade the power of your SCX24. You can choose from a variety of motors based on their specifications. We’ve made a comprehensive list of motors for your convenience.

You must know that some motor models don’t come with pinions attached. Also, some motor models come with certain requirements to install. Sounds confusing? Let’s make it easy for you. Have a look at the below table.

So, the table shows three different models of RC motors of three different price ranges. The hot racing 66T motor is longer in size compared to other motors. That’s why it requires a motor mount and battery modification mount to fit. We’ll discuss more as we proceed.

We’ll start with a budget-friendly motor and then gradually move toward more power if you don’t mind cutting some slack. Let’s get rolling then.

SCX24 Upgrade Motor – Step-By-Step Guide

Now let us go through the upgrade procedure of the three motors we have shown above.

1. Dynamite 88T/DYNS 1217

The dynamite 88T is a good budget-friendly motor also known as the DYNS 1217. It’s a basic axial scx24 motor upgrade. It has plastic material on the outside and comes with a pinion installed. You’ll also get two screws to attach it.

Now that we’re done with unpacking. Let’s follow the below steps to install the motor.

Tools you’ll need to upgrade the motor:

  • 4 mm Hex Screwdriver.
  • 1.5 mm Hex Screwdriver.
  • 0.050 Hex Wrench.

Step 1: Remove the Body Clips

The first step is to take off the body clips of your RC car. After you’ve removed all the body clips, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Take off the Battery Tray

You’re going to need to remove your battery and put that aside. You’re going to need to remove the battery tray in order to get to the actual transmission. So, you can take off the motor from the motor mount.

Now take the 0.50 wrench to remove the screw of the transmission panel. And keep these little screws together since they’re very small. It can get kind of confusing because a couple of them are different lengths. Have a look at the picture below.

Once you remove the screws the battery tray will pop out easily. Now, you can reach the transmission.

Step 3: Take off the Wires and Bottom Screws

So once you have that pinched out, now you will see the motor wires. Pop the wires out of your ESC. And then there are two screws on the bottom of the body that allow you to take out the transmission. To gain access to the motor, remove the screws. Have a look.

Step 4: Take Out the Transmission

So once you remove the bottom screws, go ahead and flip it over. And then you’ll find one more screw right on the inside shown in the picture below.

Once you find the screw, remove it with the screwdriver. If you’re looking at the front of the vehicle, it’s right to the right of the transmission. After removing this screw you can take out the whole transmission.

Step 5: Remove the Transmission Cover

Now, you’ll find another two screws in the transmission body. You’ll need the 1.5 mm hex screwdriver to remove these screws. Remove the cover once you’re done taking off the screws. Again, these screws are really small.

And if you do happen to lose these two screws, don’t worry. Your motor in the package comes with these two screws. So, you can replace them if you happen to strip them.

Step 6: Replace the Motor

Once you’ve removed all the screws that attach the motor to the cover, remove it. Now take the new motor and replace it.

Finally, put the transmission cover, then just reverse everything you just did. Put these screws back in and make sure not to overtighten the screws. Since they’re too small you can easily end up stripping them.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully upgraded your SCX24 motor.

2. Hot Racing 66T/SXTF50M11

Now let’s move on to upgrading your SCX24 with the high torque 66T motor. The procedures are the same as we mentioned with 88T. However, this 66T motor doesn’t come with a pinion, and it also requires a motor mount

The Hot Racing 66T is a high-torque motor that is capable of delivering high power. This motor turns your SCX24 ideal for rock climbing.

Due to high torque, the motor produces shock and vibration. Hence, a motor mount absorbs the shock and keeps the motor fixed with the transmission firmly.

Follow steps 1-6 as we did with the Dynamit 88T above. Remove the screws, and take off the battery panel and the motor wires from ESC. They take out the transmission cover and finally replace the motor. It’s super easy.

If you want extra power and maneuverability, definitely go with the 66T motor upgrade

3. Furitek 2204 1400Kv Brushless Motor

Many people are crazy about the Furitek 2204 brushless motor. In fact, there are valid reasons to be crazy though. Furitek 2204, as the name suggests delivers a massive 1400 kilovolt power. It’s a 14 pole 12 slot hi torque brushless motor.

Other features include high-purity copper winding, low copper loss, and better heat dissipation. Also, it has a highly efficient stator lamination and a precision balanced rotor for smooth operation.

Not only that, it contains Japanese NMB bearings to reach maximum RPM. Additionally, it comes with a CNC-machined 6061 T6 aluminum heat sink to absorb excess heat.

So, what do you think? It’s crazy, right? Upgrading to a Furitek 2204 will cost around $20.75. It’s undoubtedly a value for money.

The upgrading procedure of the Furitek 20204 will be the same as the other two. The package includes extra hex screws. However, you might want to buy the whole brushless conversion kit. That will make things easier.

The scx24 motor upgrade kit includes

  • Furitek 2204 1400Kv Brushless Motor.
  • Motor mount with CNC aluminum heat sink.
  • 12T Pinion gear and 0.5 Spur gear.

Additionally, you can try out the Lizard 20A/40A Brushless ESC and Dynamite TEGU 3S main board with FOC technology. These two products will sync best with your Furitek 2204 motor and will turn your SCX24 into a beast.

FAQs

Q: What size motor is in an SCX24?

Ans: The SCX24 has a well-powered medium-scaled motor. This motor is capable of delivering a significant amount of power to your SCX24. The Powerhobby 1/24 rock crawler brushed motor is a good alternative. It provides 15% more torque and speed compared to the stock motor.

Q: Is SCX24 waterproof?

Ans: The SCX24 is water-resistant but not waterproof. The device can withstand water splashes up to a certain point but will malfunction if submerged. However, you can upgrade your SCX24 to make it waterproof. Some ESC and Motor models have waterproof material coatings to prevent water damage.

Q: How do you bind an ESC?

Ans: To bind the ESC power off both the ESC and transmitter. Then, Connect a full charger external battery with the ESC. During this time, power up the ESC while holding the bind button for 2-3 seconds. Once the binding is complete, you’ll hear a beep. Finally, remove the external battery.
